Mild Traumatic Brain Injury following Cervical Acceleration/deceleration Injury

چکیده

Trauma sustained in motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) is the single most important cause of both fatal and mild brain injuries, causing 67% of all cases. The most common diagnosis given is concussion. The head and neck, being suspended at the end of a comparatively inflexible torso, are subject to high acceleration forces during a MVC that often result in injuries to these areas. In low-speed rear impact collisions (LOSRIC), head acceleration is frequently two and one-half times that of the vehicle, and brain injury is a common consequence. Many of these MVCrelated injuries are the result of blunt head injury, which describes contact with some object, but without penetration of the skull. An example would be striking the steering wheel or doorpost. However, even without head contact, MVCs can produce very high accelerations of the brain with resulting brain injury.

A Novel Model of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury for Juvenile Rats

Despite growing evidence that childhood represents a major risk period for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) from sports-related concussions, motor vehicle accidents, and falls, a reliable animal model of mTBI had previously not been developed for this important aspect of development. The modified weight-drop technique employs a glancing impact to the head of a freely moving rodent transmittin...

The Differences between Blast-Induced and Sports-Related Brain Injuries

a collision with another player, a fall to the ground, or being hit by balls and bats. It occurs as a result of sudden acceleration/ deceleration or rotational forces imparted to the brain (4, 6). Sudden linear acceleration/deceleration forces to the head are known to be a mechanism for closed head injury, which cause discrete, focal lesions that affect only certain areas of the brain (the poin...

Effect of Mild Brain Traumatic Injury on Intelligence and memory Function in Motorcycle Riders

Introduction: The most common causes of traumatic brain injury are vehicle crashes, including motorcycles, which lead to long-term disabilities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mild brain trauma on intelligence and memory function in motorcycle riders suffering from mild tumor injury.   Materials & Methods: In this prospective cohort study, intelligence and memory fu...

Neuronal injury and death following focal mild brain injury: The role of network excitability and seizure

Objective(s): While traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a predisposing factor for development of post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE), the occurrence of seizures following brain trauma can infuriate adverse consequences of brain injury. However, the effect of seizures in epileptogenesis after mild TBI cannot yet be accurately confirmed. This study was designed to investigate the ...

Electroencephalgraphy and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

This chapter is a review and analysis of quantitative EEG (qEEG) for the evaluation of the locations and extent of injury to the brain following rapid acceleration/deceleration trauma, especially in mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). The earliest use of qEEG was by Hans Berger in 1932 and since this time over 1,600 peer reviewed journal articles have been published in which qEEG was used to eva...
